Watershed Case Studies

Since 1992, the NEMO Team and the Forest Stewardship Program have partnered with the Silvio O. Conte National Wildlife Refuge, the Nature Conservancy and many other groups in the region to develop a replicable watershed model for the lower Connecticut River valley. The watershed projects are non-regulatory, education driven efforts that make use of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to help provide a watershed perspective to local interests.

The philosophy is that local land use decisions, by both municipal officials and individual land owners, hold the key to the ultimate fate of a watershed’s natural resources. And that the health of these resources is closely linked with both the long-term economic vitality of the region and the rural character of its communities.
