Green Roof

In 2002, NEMO collaborated with Weston Solutions, Inc.—a leading environmental and infrastructure redevelopment firm located in Glastonbury, CT.—to create a test and demonstration “green” roof site in Haddam. The demonstration green roof contains GreenGrid™ modular green roof units. Vegetated green roofs go back to Biblical times, and are currently used extensively in Europe as a way to save energy, reduce the "heat island" effect of urban areas, improve the urban environment and reduce stormwater runoff from rooftops.

These 4' x 2' GreenGrid™ units, donated and installed by Weston Solutions, Inc., September 2002, represent a step forward in making green roof technology practical and affordable for small buildings like houses and garages. The plants, mostly varieties of sedums, are planted ahead of time, and the modular units and lightweight growing media make installation relatively easy. For more information on the GreenGrid™ System, see the Green Roof Products section or the Green Roof Links section.
