East Hartford, CT Redevelopment
Replacing Concrete with Porous Pavers
Site Description: Alumni Park was completed during March
1997. It is located in East Hartford, CT. There are two entrances
to the park. One is on Main Street (Rt. 5) and the other is on Richard
Road. Design Details: This site had originally been a commercial
establishment. There was a significant amount of site preparation
that needed to be done before the actual construction of the park
could begin. An existing concrete block building and paved areas
were torn down and ripped up to construct the park (seen site plan
below). The building footprint, was replaced with porous materials.
All existing pavement was pulverized and then stockpiled for re-use
as base material for new pavement.
There is a concrete walk running through the length of the park.
It was laid down in block style with permeable breaks in between
sections. Precast concrete pavers were also installed along side
the concrete walk to increase the amount of stormwater infiltration
(Top-right photograph). The precast concrete pavers were also used
to provide maintenance vehicles access to certain areas.
Maintenance: After the park had experienced its first winter
a couple of specific construction and maintenance issues were discovered.
In areas where plastic or concrete edging had not been installed,
freezing and thawing had caused some of the precast concrete pavers
to separate (see picture on right). Also, in areas were the sub-base
had not be laid down uniformly, freezing and thawing had caused
some precast concrete pavers to sink and then settle lower than
the rest of the pavers (see picture on right).
Notes: It was noted that the herring bone precast concrete
pavers infiltrate more stormwater.
